Local golfer to compete in Nevada

September 19, 2012

Shawn Holcomb

Most of us marvel at how far Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, and Bubba Watson can hit the golf ball. At the Region 5 Finals held at the Winstar Casino Golf Complex this past weekend, there were over 100 competitors that can hit longer than those three. Shawn Holcomb competed in the Open Class Division on Sunday, September 16th. The weather that morning was not ideal for long drives as it was overcast with a wet fairway and a light rain when the competition started. Thankfully there was not much wind. With those conditions, there was no roll on the drives with many of the balls plugging right where they landed. Shawn was able to post drives of 373, 366, 354, 361, and 365 in the 5 rounds that he competed in. This was good enough for him to qualify for the World’s Long Drive Finals held in Mesquite, Nevada in October.
