Borger hosted the Herd from Hereford in a Friday night showdown. Turnovers were a key stat in both games, as both Borger teams finished with over 30 in their respective games.
The Varsity Lady Bulldogs took almost four minutes off the clock before they scored their first field goal, a fast break lay-up by Lawson. N. Embers has a steal which leads to two for her, and Lawson drives in for another two. Gillum sinks two free throws for Borger, and they are down 16-8 after the first quarter.
Prater has a nice three point play to start the second quarter for Borger. She also has two free throws, and the Lady Dogs are in the free throw bonus very early in the second. Purcell and Wood are also good from the charity stripe, and Wood also has a good play under the net with an offensive rebound and put back to bring Borger within two. Two more from a Lawson jumper finds the game tied up at 20 all, after the Lady Dogs have nice movement of the ball. Urquidi hits a three late in the first half, and the Lady Dogs go into halftime only down 29-25.
The third quarter was when the Herd pulled away. Lawson had a nice bucket to start the scoring in the third, but fouls were a problem for her and Prater as they both earned their fourth foul in the third. Coach Francis was called for a technical after disagreeing with a foul call, and the ladies only scored 10 in the quarter, compared to 21 from Hereford.
The fourth was good for Borger. Wood has a three point play and then two free throws. Lawson hits another two to cut the lead to 9. Wood again was tough under the basket as she is fouled after an offensive rebound. Her shot and her free throw is good for another three point play. With 2:45 left in the game, the lead was only 8, and Borger had the momentum. Wood was on fire as she works inside for another field goal to cut the lead to 6. They could not cut it any closer, though, and Hereford found their groove late in the fourth to pull away. The final score is 66-55, despite a solid effort from the Lady Dogs.
Wood and Lawson each had 17 points for Borger. Wood also had 10 rebounds. N. Embers was the next highest scorer with 7 points and 9 rebounds.
The JV girls played a close game, but they also lost 45-40.
The Varsity Dogs had a tough night against a tough Hereford team.
Rawlinson had all the points for the Dogs in the sluggish first quarter. He hit a free throw and a field goal inside. Felker earned three fouls in the first quarter, and they did not score the first field goal for 6:30. Hereford was already in the free throw bonus at the end of the first. It was 18-3 after one.
The second quarter did not go much better. Hearon hit a jumper and a three for Borger in the quarter. There were many turnovers against Borger, and they just could not overcome them. They go into the locker room at halftime down 30-12 and looking for answers.
The third started with two from Hearon. Newton is called for a charge to earn his third foul early in the third. Wilson hits a nice three from behind the arc, but the Dogs are still down 40-18 after three quarters of play.
The fourth was plagued with more bad passes and turnovers for Borger. Hereford's tough defense and their press was hard to overcome. Hearon hits a field goal late, but the Bulldogs fall 52-26.
Hearon was the leading scorer in his first game back this year with 14 points. Rawlinson added seven points and four rebounds for the Dogs.
